Understanding the EnergyGuide label allows you, the consumer, to see valuable information about the cost of operating an appliance and other helpful info in a quick glance. You can use this information to choose appliances that are more energy efficient and cost less to operate over time. Let's take a closer look at the EnergyGuide label and the information it provides.
Directly below the word "EnergyGuide" there are two sets of information in small print. On the right side is the make and model information of the appliance. On the left side is a list of key features of the appliance, particularly those that impact the cost of operating the appliance.
Below the features and model number is a box showing Estimated Yearly Operating Cost. This shows a range based on this model and similar models from lowest to highest, with a pinpoint of where this specific appliance is most likely to fall. This section of the label helps you compare the estimated cost of operating the appliance when comparing between similar appliances.
Below that is a box with the Estimated Yearly Electricity Use listed in kilowatt hours (kWh). This number represents how much electricity the appliance is expected to use in a year under typical use conditions. You would multiply this number by the actual utility rate per kWh from your utility bill to get a better sense of cost for one year of use in your area with your local rates.
If there is an ENERGY STAR symbol in the bottom right corner of the label, the appliance is a certified ENERGY STAR appliance. This means it has passed certification showing that it consumes less electricity than other, standard models and is also better for the environment because of reduced energy consumption.

The summer heat is coming and that means more people will be firing up their air conditioning or cooling units to keep their homes comfortable. If you crank up the A/C and aren't feeling the chill, there are some things you can check before calling your Carolina Comfort Systems technician out for a service call.
1. Check the outside unit for obstructions and debris. Inspect the outdoor unit to make sure no leaves, twigs or other debris are stuck in the unit or interfering with proper operation. Clear away any debris you find.
2. Check the disconnect switch connected to the outside unit. This is usually a power box mounted on a wall near the outside unit. You'll want to make sure the disconnect switch is in the "ON" position.
3. Check the air filter for your HVAC unit. Excessively dirty filters restrict airflow and can cause some units to shut down for safety. Replace the filter with a brand new one and make sure to change the filter monthly going forward.
4. Check your thermostat for proper operation. Make sure your thermostat is on the "COOL" setting. Make sure the display is fully visible and is not giving a beeping noise, which could indicate a low battery. If the display is not visible, is flashing or the thermostat unit is beeping, put fresh batteries in the unit and check operation.
5. Make sure the blower is running. Turn the thermostat's desired temperature below the current temperature shown in the room. If you don't hear the blower kick on, check the on/off switch on the indoor furnace unit to make sure it is in the "ON" position.
6. Check the circuit breaker in the breaker box to look for a tripped fuse/breaker.
7. Check air vents and air returns to ensure nothing is blocking the registers. Furniture, boxes or other items blocking an air vent or return register can cause the system to shut down for safety.
